WELL . . . if all Southerners aren’t racists, and if all LSU fans aren’t stupid — which they aren’t, on both counts — then you’d better be doing something about the iunordinately large minority of mouth-breathers who are.

No matter who it was meant to “piss off,” there was no cause for that sign . . . which was only minimally clever but majorly stupid and offensive. And — guess what? — it turned out to be a PR disaster for a state that specializes in making itself look bad to the rest of the world.

Frankly, that sign was as good a reason to be pissed off as any — and only minimally for reasons surrounding the game and UCI fans. It’s just a reminder of why I left Louisiana myself, and am glad I did.

I’ve lived in Omaha for 20 years now — remember Omaha? — and LSU fans had better not be bringing that bush-league “Fergit, hell!” crap up here:

OK….reading comprehension time for all of you TOPS scholars. Never did FOTP call LSU or its fans racist. The only time the word was even thrown out there was when it was used to describe an inanimate object (ie. the sign). Was the sign, in context, directed at the comments of UCI’s coach?…yes. Would that sign still be offensive on some level regardless the context?…yes. Was it a dumb sign to cart out in public?…yes. Regardless, theres one thing Im sure we can reach common ground on…we all hate eskimos.

Good for the Aardvarks of California. Now they can feel as if they won something.

Unfortunately, the all important battle of public opinion will not get them to Omaha.

The residents of Baton Rouge and South Louisiana have recently elected an African American Mayor, an Indian American Governor, and an African-American Presidential Nominee for the US. That is not bad for a bunch of racists!

I don’t for a second believe Gillespie didn’t mean to suggest that about LSU. Why else would he have said it? And not that it excuses any bad behavior by LSU fans, and there was some, he set the tone for the Super Regional when he made those ridiculous remarks.

Here’s what the UC Irvine Coach said:

Gillespie said the LSU fans will be different from those UCI encountered at Nebraska.

“That was pretty electric,” Gillespie said of Saturday night’s crowd of 8,646 at Haymarket Park that witnessed UCI’s 3-2 win over the host Cornhuskers. “It was a sea of red, but they’re not a hostile group,” Gillespie said of the Nebraska faithful.

“They’re not on you, and they’re not rude and they’re not vicious and they know the Civil War is over and they know how to act,” Gillespie said, before backtracking somewhat. “Now, I don’t mean to suggest [that is the case at LSU] I really don’t.”
