Avoiding Shreveport

September 3rd, 2008 by Bunkie Perkins · No Comments

Microsoft Paint son!  This is as fancy as we get until our new computer shows up.

There are very few things more disheartening among SEC fans than the prospects of spending the bowl season at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana .  But a mediocre season and an 8th place finish in the toughest conference in the land will get you some nice parting gifts and an all expenses paid trip to the Port City.  Teams and fans alike are sure to enjoy the oppresive heat, street violence, and…hey look, casinos!  Every week FOTP will be taking a look at which SEC teams have the best chance of going bowling in  East Texas the third most glamorous city in the Bayou State.

1.  Kentucky.  Used cunning and 310 pounds of glory to dispose of  Kragthorpe the Program Destroyer in an ugly in-state contest.  They have enough cannon foder on the schedule (Im looking in your general direction Norfolk State and Western Kentucky) to get bowl eligible but not enough horses in the stable to compete in the stacked SEC East.

2.  Ole Miss.  The Houston Nutt Mississippi Squirrel Revival (my grandfather made me listen to Ray Stevens tapes…sorry) got off to a rousing start against quasi-rival Memphis.  Nutt will win the games he is supposed to and keep the Rebels competitive in the West.  A return to the Indy Bowl, home of the David Cutcliffe glory years, could be imminent.

3.  Arkansas.  The Petrino Opening Ceremonies did not go as well as planned as the Hogs werent able to put away directional Illinois until late.  This does not bode well for the “the cubbard is bare” year in Fayettenam.  Non-conference weaklings and a few SEC wins could keep the Razorbacks in the picture.

4.  Vandy.  Hasn’t been in a bowl since 1982.  The Commodore 64 was also introduced in ’82…this is somehow significant we think.  Vandy looked very unVandylike in its win over Miami-OH but they’ll have to do some serious upsetting down the stretch to get to the magic number of 6 wins.

5.  Mississippi State.  The perfect scenario of inept offense, defensive injuries, and general absenteeism led to State getting embarrassed in a glorified high school stadium in tiny Ruston.  State will need to pick up the pieces quickly and hope for the opportunistic breaks they got in ’07 in order to make a run at scenic Northwest Louisiana.
