Avoiding Shreveport

Hey look!  The Bridge of Activities ((C) SnyderNews Network)

There are very few things more disheartening among SEC fans than the prospects of spending the bowl season at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana .  But a mediocre season and an 8th place finish in the toughest conference in the land will get you some nice parting gifts and an all expenses paid trip to the Port City.  Teams and fans alike are sure to enjoy the oppressive heat, street violence, and…hey look, casinos!  Every week FOTP will be taking a look at which SEC teams have the best chance of going bowling in  East Texas the third most glamorous city in the Bayou State.

1.  Kentucky.  We still have no clue how good or bad they are, but they have enough couch stuffing on the schedule (see last weekends thriller versus Norfolk State) to get to 6 wins, and that will get your ticket punched to the Ratchet City every time.

2.  Vanderbilt.  Commodore students put down your books…you may in fact have a viable football team this fall.  The Vandy schedule gets progressively harder, starting this week with upstart Rice, but the upset win over Darth Visor has Nashville primed for its first post season trip since the Reagan administration.

3.  Ole Miss.  Hope and renewed optimism abound as the Rebels came away with the all too familiar “moral victory” against Wake Forest.  Ole Miss has found a quarterback in Jevan Sead and he’ll keep them in every game this year, but until they can get over the hump and win a meaningful game, they look destined for a trip down I-20.

4.  Arkansas.  The. Worst. 2-0. Team. In. The. Country.  If I was Hog fan, I might consider taking the rest of the year off, go on vacation, find a new hobby, write the great American novel…anything to distract you, because the rest of the year is going to be a blood bath of 80′s horror movie proportions.  Let the Jamie Lee Curtis-esque screams begin emanating from Austin this weekend.

5.  Mississippi State.  We hope the Starkville faithful enjoyed that rousing win over the SLU Lions over the weekend, because another victory wont be in sight for at least a month.  The Dawgs welcome Auburn to town this week, then head to Atlanta to take on Paul Johnson’s super terrific option extravaganza, then they go to LSU…and we know how well that worked out last year.
