Avoiding Shreveport

September 16th, 2008 by Bunkie Perkins · No Comments

Cedric Glover, “The Overweight Lover”, welcomes you to his fair city

There are very few things more disheartening among SEC fans than the prospects of spending the bowl season at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana .  But a mediocre season and an 8th place finish in the toughest conference in the land will get you some nice parting gifts and an all expenses paid trip to the Port City.  Teams and fans alike are sure to enjoy the oppressive heat, street violence, and…hey look, casinos!  Every week FOTP will be taking a look at which SEC teams have the best chance of going bowling in  East Texas the third most glamorous city in the Bayou State.

1.  Kentucky.  The Cats welcome the off week after a stirring 4th quarter rally against Middle Tennessee State.  The rest comes at just the right time and allows Big Blue a little extra prep time before their intrastate clash with Western Kentucky in week four…it took all we had to write those two sentences without the least bit of sarcasm.  Rich Brooks probably has some choice words about his team’s schedule, but with it,  6 wins and a parade down Texas Street are a mortal lock.

2.  Vanderbilt/Ole Miss.  This weekend’s game between the Dores and Rebs in Oxford might as well be a classic 80′s NWA style “Loser Leaves Town” match (we can only hope Harley Race will somehow be involved).  The winner here heads to the front of the Greyhound bus line to Shreveport, the loser will have to pull an upset or two to get back into the Port City picture.

 3.  Arkansas.  The warden gave the Razorbacks a reprieve last Saturday, postponing the execution in Austin for a few weeks due to Hurricane Ike.  Bama and their shiny new Top 10 ranking come to town to more than likely serve Arkansas a heavy dose of football reality.  With the SEC season getting started, it may be a while until Arkansas sees a W again.

4.  Mississippi State.  Abandon all hope ye who enter the offensive huddle in Starkville.  May we recommend just taking a knee and hoping for the best on defense, it couldnt be much worse.   The bright lights of Shreveport’s casino-saturated riverfront seem so far away at this point.
