Avoiding Shreveport

Hal Sutton’s boobie sweat welcomes you to his hometown

There are very few things more disheartening among SEC fans than the prospects of spending the bowl season at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana .  But a mediocre season and an 8th place finish in the toughest conference in the land will get you some nice parting gifts and an all expenses paid trip to the Port City.  Teams and fans alike are sure to enjoy the oppressive heat, street violence, and…hey look, casinos!  Every week FOTP will be taking a look at which SEC teams have the best chance of going bowling in  East Texas the third most glamorous city in the Bayou State.

1.  Kentucky.  After a week off to think about just how bad their non-conference schedule is, the Cats return to action for an in-state tilt with recently all grown up Western Kentucky.   According to the ‘Toppers, this is a rivalry game…even though these teams have never played each other before, ever.  Chalk up another easy one for UK in their quest for Port City immortality.

2.  Vandy.  They had half as many total yards as Ole Miss and their starting quarterback didn’t play most of the second half, yet the turnover gods gave to the Dores and gave abundantly, including a gift fumble by Ole Miss in the endzone as they approached for the go ahead score in the 4th.  Indy Bowl destiny has a face, and its black and gold probably has a healthy trust fund.

3.  South Carolina.  A welcome newcomer to the poll but the Cocks are no stranger to the lures of the Ark-la-tex.  You can hear the groans coming out of Spurrier’s office at the mere notion that his offensively challenged squad may have to head back to Shreveport and he’ll have to again feign excitement over the prospect for the local rubes.  On the bright side, Stephen Garcia should be able to score some kind rather easily.

4.  Ole Miss.  While you read the above, Jevan Snead just threw 3 more picks.  Ole Miss was easily 3 scores better than Vandy but a litany of turnovers and penalties doomed Houston Dale’s squad.  Upcoming games at Florida and at Bama will make 6 wins and a bowl invite alot harder to attain.

5.  Mississippi State/Arkansas:  Both are abysmal with no relief in sight.  State will seek only its 2nd offensive score in 3 weeks in Baton Rouge this weekend…I dont like their chances.  Arkansas was exposed for well, tell em Denny Green.
