Avoiding Shreveport

Man, we miss the Pirates

There are very few things more disheartening among SEC fans than the prospects of spending the bowl season at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana . But a mediocre season and an 8th place finish in the toughest conference in the land will get you some nice parting gifts and an all expenses paid trip to the Port City. Teams and fans alike are sure to enjoy the oppressive heat, street violence, and…hey look, casinos! Every week FOTP will be taking a look at which SEC teams have the best chance of going bowling in East Texas the third most glamorous city in the Bayou State.

1.  Some random MAC/Sun Belt team.  As we documented earlier, this nightmare could be a foregone conclusion  at this point.  The Indy Bowl powers that be will be pulling for upsets galore in the final weeks of the season in hopes that the Big 12 and SEC teams at the top of the BCS list get knocked off and some of the mediocre squads somehow scrape together enough wins to be eligible.  We say bring on the Akron Zips!

2.  Kentucky.  Holding on to that 6th win like it was a Wonka Bar golden ticket.  Too bad a potential trip to Shreveport is kinda like an evening spent spooning with Grandpa Joe in the family bed.  That Grandpa Joe was a creep bag.

3.  Vandy.  We haven’t thrown in the towel on the Dores yet, but we are kinda looking over at Tony Burton to see if we ought to.  Vandy finishes with some pretty winable games against Kentucky, Tennessee, and Wake…if only Mackenzie Adams would turn his attention away from his many sweat bands and hair products long enough to put a few in the endzone for Bobby Johnson’s offense.

4.  Ole Miss.  The Rebs are wooly as of late and become bowl eligible with a win at home against ULM this weekend, but they’ve got their sights set on anything from the Cotton to the Liberty should they be able to finish with a flurry.

5.  Arkansas.  Still mathematically in the hunt, so we’ve got to, begrudgingly, include them.  Lawyer Malloy’s favorite coach has his team playing better as the season goes on, plus they play a stagnant Mississippi State team this weekend and a wounded LSU squad in Little Rock the next, so anything is possible.
