Who are all those old broads?

You work for the internets writing about sports. There is no football or basketball. You’re halfway into a 2,430 game beisbol season so nobody gives a rip about until it matters (if it ever matters) and you aren’t even sure Hockey still exists (or if it ever existed).  Sure you could cover the final leg of the 2009 PBA tour, but if Doritos and huffable paint chips aren’t your top sponsors what kind of value are you adding?  So where do all good writers turn (not just sports writers) when there is nothing to cover?

Superfluous Lists.

Top Ten Running Back U’s

Top 100 Co-eds.

Top 4 QBs over 280lbs.

Top 1 NFL RBs with 14 Illigitimate Children.

The beautiful thing about “all time” lists is all you have to do is create them ONCE and they become Summer fodder for the rest of your career with a few yearly tweaks here and there.

Which leads me to Jeff D’Alessio’s recently released Sporting News’ 50 Greatest Coaches of all time list.

I have no idea if he’s published this before, but Roger Staubach and Isiah Thomas were involved in this year’s edition so who am I to question it’s fallibility.

Really there is nothing wrong with these lists (or even this list in particular). They spark debate in a time when we all desperately need something fresh to debate. Of course these are decades old, largely stagnate topics, but they are successfully marketed to us as a new concept on a summerly basis. You’ll argue the list now, forget about it when something that matters come along, and hop back on the same argument (and with a few changes maybe even with a different perspective) in a years time.

One things for sure ole’ Jeff might hear a thing or two about ranking The Bahr at a viciously low #3.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is that I need to do some lists.

Shaq has been long ridiculed for his acting abilities, or lack thereof.  Its hard to block the likes of Kazaam and Steel out of ones mind without the help of potent narcotics.  Lucky for him the bad acting, and probably the narcotics, were in play Monday Night On Raw.  Shaq serves as guest host/booker for the evening.  The main event saw Chris Jericho and The Big Show team up against Cryme Tyme (ah racial stereo types in wrestling…somewhere Kamala the Ugandan Giant is shedding a tear) with Shaq serving as “special enforcer”, a roll I think he’ll have to reprise in Cleveland thoughout next season.  The inevitable occurred, as it inevitably does, with the 7ft Shaq standing toe to toe with the 7ft Big Show…Hulk Hogan levels of selling moves then occurred as both feigned choke holds until Cryme Tyme showed up for the save.  Shaq then does Hacksaw Jim Duggan proud, delivering the shoulder block to The Show, sending him “flying” out of the ring.  The bright sides for the WWE…Shaq delivered mainstream attention and he already sells bumps better than Batista, so its a win either way.

Pistol Pete laughs at your feeble attempt to imitate

The NBA and TnT have announced that they are foregoing a footrace between a drunken gambler and an old man to instead include HORSE into the events off NBA All Star Weekend.  Somewhere, Bill Simmons is giddy.  The NBA used to have this as part of their All Star show but after Pete Maravich  (as seen above) utterly dominated the event they put a stop to it in favor of more thrilling events…events that led to the likes of Harold Minor and Brent Berry winning slam dunk competitions, so maybe getting rid of it in the first place wasn’t such a hot idea.

This isn’t major news, but any excuse I have to post old Pistol Pete footage will not be squandered.
